Cloud steppe as a title combines references to the steppes of Mongolia (a term used for the bare grasslands of the Gobi desert) and the feeling of being in the clouds when you’re there. I found the feeling of elevation at high altitude in the Gobi quite startling and beautiful, the clouds feel low and enlarged, it's really surreal.

This song was built from a riff played on the Da Ruan; a Chinese bass lute. The textural glitchy vocal samples came from a friend and were collected during the 70s in Papua New Guinea - this was an interesting set of samples to me since my parents spent many years living there and my mum spent some of her youth there.

The plucked melody is a koto sample, with the top line string parts from a morin khuur (a Mongolian instrument using horsehair for the bow and the strings) played by longtime collaborator Bukhu. The feeling in most Mongolia folk music is to capture the spirit of horses, and I wanted to tip my hat to this tradition with the groove of this song -it's not exactly your average electronic ‘beat’ and is the wild card track on the album in a way.
