Valentina is the latest single from producer and multi-instrumentalist Captain Earwax (aka Daniel O’Toole). Written across the peak of lockdowns on the East Coast of Australia, Valentina is a cross state collaboration with Soul/RnB vocalist Natalie Slade (Eglo Records).

“The beat for Valentina started by using samples recorded at home from a goat skin medicine drum from there I built up with layered claps and snare drum samples aiming for a bouncy sort of groove that had forward momentum. Using a Fender Rhodes piano and then a MiniMoog model D Synthesiser to create the space echo for more playful melodies that drift through the track.” - Captain Earwax

Inspired by the wonders of space travel and being free of earthly problems. The responding lyrics for Slade were inspired by her readings of Valentina Tereshkova, the Russian engineer, and former cosmonaut who was the first and youngest woman to have flown in space on a solo mission.

I hear a chorus, like sounds in the forest that blurred from a distance away. Close enough to hold it, the night had unfolded and revealed the stars in its wake.
